Website Hostage Situations Are Real – And They’re Uglier Than You Think

A Frustrated Rant (and a Warning) from a Real Digital Marketer Who Cares

We’ve had it. Seriously.

Too often—far too often—we hear from small business owners who’ve been ghosted, gouged, manipulated, or outright scammed by someone claiming to be a “digital marketer” or “web developer.”

Here’s the truth no one wants to say out loud:
The digital marketing and web industry is broken.
It’s overrun by freelancers with no business acumen, agencies that overpromise and underdeliver, and tech bros playing business like it’s a video game—except real small businesses are the ones paying the price.

Let’s call it what it is:

  • Zero professionalism. Missed deadlines, no-shows for meetings, and “strategies” made up on the fly. If some of these folks were electricians or contractors, they’d be out of business (or sued).
  • No credentials, no accountability. Anyone with a laptop and a Canva account can call themselves a marketer. No certifications, no proven track record, no formal training. Just a bunch of buzzwords and bravado.
  • Held hostage. Domains registered in the developer’s name. Google logins they “forget” to give you. Websites you technically don’t even own. These people treat your business like it’s theirs and then disappear when you ask for access.
  • Immature and childish behavior. Ask a question, get defensive. Ask for a change, get ghosted. Hold them accountable, and suddenly you’re the problem.
  • Absolutely unresponsive. You’d get a faster reply from a message in a bottle than from some of these folks. And forget ongoing support—after launch, they vanish into the mist like digital Bigfoot.
  • No understanding of your business goals. They’re too focused on their fancy design or trendy TikTok ideas to actually listen to what you’re trying to achieve. You want leads? Visibility? Conversions? Crickets.

🎤 Enough is enough.

Small business owners don’t have time for this. You’re busy trying to run your business—juggling operations, staff, customer service, and family life. You shouldn’t have to become a tech detective just to figure out who owns your website.

You need a partner.
A grown-up.
Someone who speaks clearly, acts with integrity, and knows what they’re doing.

That’s why we built Hyperweb.ca

We’re not some faceless agency or flaky freelancer who just discovered WordPress last month. We’re a team of experienced, professional, accountable humans who genuinely give a damn.

We speak plainly.
We meet deadlines.
We deliver results aligned with your business goals—not vanity metrics.

And yes—you own your stuff. Your domain, your content, your website. Always.

This is the first in a series.

We’re going to keep calling this crap out.
Because too many business owners have been burned. And too many shady operators are still getting away with it.

Follow us as we dig deeper into:

  • Website hostage situations (real stories)
  • SEO smoke and mirrors
  • Google Ads disasters
  • Fake “gurus” selling hype instead of help
  • How to actually vet a digital partner

They might be in the middle of a mess they don’t even know how to get out of.
And if you’re an agency or marketer reading this feeling called out…
Good.
Be better.
